The Bonn Scott Overture

When you consider everything right and pure

It has a certain unattainable lure

One you can never really know for sure

Or attain through mystic tincture

So you scuttle sullen and demure

Justify proudly who you were

Like a comfy piece of furniture

You sink into your numbing blur

In the end you gasp for air, grasp for cure

You play your final overture

And the coroner without a slur

Pronounced you “dead by misadventure”

Personal Commentary

Bonn Scott, the lead singer of AC/DC during their 1st four albums, died in the back seat of a friend's car after drinking too much booze one night. The coroner pronounced his demise as “Death by misadventure”. Learning this made me wonder, what leads to misadventure, as opposed to adventure? I believe it boils down to this:

As humans, we aren’t perfect, but we often either put that expectation on ourselves, or have other’s place it upon us. Ultimately, it is what God requires for entry to eternity, yet no one on their own can ever, ever attain perfection. Without the answer, we, as failures of perfection, do one of two things.

One: we pretend, erroneously, we are perfect (righteous) apart from God, or are at least doing better than others therefore we get a pass, and thereby set ourselves up as a god in place of the God, or...

Two: we eschew perfection and swing the pendulum toward the prolific, open practice of sin. We intentionally miss the mark.

At some point, in spite of fame and fortune, Bonn Scott understood, or became subconsciously aware of, his lack of righteousness and gave up striving toward it. He became comfortable only when he was too numbed by alcohol to consider his failures, because doing so would mean admitting he was a sinner, or admitting he wasn’t God. His goal then, became death. Death over facing truth. He chose to live fast and hard, not caring about negative consequences, because those consequences would serve his goal.

Bonn Scott’s death by misadventure can serve as a lesson to us all, if we are paying attention. Do you want to die amiss? Without purpose? Are you striving to miss the mark? To accept life as a misadventure? What is the cost of doing so?

There is an alternate, and the alternate is true adventure.

What is true adventure? Is it something you decide is fun? Is it something someone decides to tell you is their idea of fun? Is adventure an escape from reality? Is it temporary relief from pain? Is it just not being bored?

The key is to ask: what does adventure, in its purest form, lead to? The answer is joy. Humans experience joy through exhilaration, sensation, unification, justification, even domination, among others. But what type of joy lasts? Where does joy come from? Which joy is the most enduring and meaningful? Which joy can we harbor in our very soul and count on foundationally to lean on day in and day out, regardless of the curveballs life throws our way?

Essentially, a joy that gets renewed every day, is the only joy with enough sustainability to endure life’s trials. What could possibly renew joy every day? Hope.

Isn’t hope hollow? Like the promises of a politician? It certainly can be, if the hope is placed in anything temporary. But what happens when hope is placed in eternity? If eternity never goes away, does the hope of eternity go away? Not if it’s grounded in something concrete and equally eternal.

The Bible tells of us such a grounded, concrete, eternal hope, hope that leads to joy, a joy which leads us on a true, meaningful, soul satisfying adventure.

(See the verses posted below for just some of the joy God provides for us.)

Lasting joy comes by way of being right, or not failing. You, nor I, can ever achieve that ideal, but we can accept it as a gift from the God of Heaven by way of his humble act of giving Himself in our place as atonement for the failures we commit.

The answer to attaining the righteousness required for eternal joy is Jesus’s sacrificial act on the cross, and act which overcame sin and was indeed the satisfaction and overcomer of the ineptness of mankind’s sins. Christ bridged the gap between the sins of man and the perfection of God.

To summarize:

Until the time eternity begins we can rest in the assurity of eternal hope and walk daily on a true, meaningful adventure, knowing the adventure leads to a joy-filled destination.

In other words, we can reach Heaven by accepting that Jesus is God and He died in place of our sins so that we might find hope now and joy eternal.

And they spoke the word of the Lord to him together with all who were in his house. And he took them that very hour of the night and washed their wounds, and immediately he was baptized, he and all his household. And he brought them into his house and set food before them, and rejoiced greatly, having believed in God with his whole household.

Her Soul

Her soul

I saw a girl walk by the other day
Her majesty blew my mind away
Made a move to meet ‘er ‘cause - wow!
I ain’t never gonna leave her now

She’s as fine as sassafras
Mmm, bare feet on fresh cut grass
Makes me feel like the richest king
Hear the bells in my head ring?

Do you realize what you’ve done to me, girl?
Set me on fire, spun around my world
Do you think I’ll be the same anymore?
Walk in those old shoes I wore?

Well I won’t, you know I won’t!
Gonna be a diff’rent man - woo!
Gonna follow you around
Gonna lay my money down
Gonna act a fool ‘cause I’m in love with - you!

Did you see my girl when she walked by?
She’s as hot as a forest fire
Turnin heads and knockin’ knees
Leavin’ crowds buzzin’ like bumble bees

Boys are jealous and girls are sad
When she wears solids, stripes or plaid
She could make an old rag look good
Revitalize any neighborhood

Do you realize what you’ve done to me, girl?
Set me on fire, spun around my world
Do you think I’ll be the same anymore?
Walk in those old shoes I wore?

Well I won’t, you know I won’t!
Gonna be a diff’rent man - woo!
Gonna follow you around
Gonna lay my money down
Gonna act a fool ‘cause I’m in love with - you!

Ever wanna stay in one place?
I get that way when I see her face
It glows like the sun, sends clouds away
Makes the music in my body play

She takes me to new heights
Turns cold days into warm nights
Like a fire in the fireplace
Is my being in her embrace

Do you realize what you’ve done to me, girl?
Set me on fire, spun around my world
Do you think I’ll be the same anymore?
Walk in those old shoes I wore?

Well I won’t, you know I won’t!
Gonna be a diff’rent man - woo!
Gonna follow you around
Gonna lay my money down
Gonna act a fool ‘cause I’m in love with - you!

Obstacles gone, she broadens my range
Never stop explorin’, gonna see some change
Hearts together on the wind adrift
Her smile, it makes my spirit lift

There’s just something about her soul
Sweet jelly on a breakfast roll
Icing on the cake, ice in the tea
I wonder what she sees in me?

Do you realize what you’ve done to me, girl?
Set me on fire, spun around my world
Do you think I’ll be the same anymore?
Walk in those old shoes I wore?

Well I won’t, you know I won’t!
Gonna be a diff’rent man - woo!
Gonna follow you around
Gonna lay my money down
Gonna act a fool ‘cause I’m in love with - you!

Motive for Motivation

A sinker on the lure
My will to surface
An anchor in the deep

An empty coffee cup
When I need a double shot
Fog conceals ideas

Then the light breaks through!
Birds aloft in flight
Love and laughter lift me
Revealing possible, grasping might

Eyelids made of stone
I can’t wake today
My bed a magnet

Darkness hides me
I’m locked away
Sleep, my prison

Then the light breaks through!
Suddenly alive
A friends’ smile lifts me
Revealing possible, I can thrive

Pressure drags me down
I succumb to doubt
Demoralized by self

A wall of failure
Blots my view
Halts progression

Then the light breaks through!
I accept God’s grace
The Holy Spirit lifts me
Revealing possible, I’ll win this race!

For Life

And you’re somehow a part of me now
You’ve taken the best
Forsaken the rest
And what’s left is far better than gold
More sprite-full than youth
With wisdom of old
Like a savory dish in a succulent sauce
You bring hope to life
Bring meaning to loss

So I prepare my heart
Take head to the notion
I look closer at art
I go swim in the ocean
For life

‘Cause I know there’s a day it’ll all go away
This lifetime affair
A sudden wisp in the air
So I beg of my love be with me today
Hold my tender hand right
Kiss my neck in the night
Strengthen the bond we’ve grown together as one
Husband and wife
Together we’ve won

Let’s prepare our hearts
Take head to the notion
Let’s make our own art
Let’s go swim in the ocean
For life

Talking with the Dead Again

My brother Joe was anything but slow
He was the fastest kid on the block
Down at the vacant lot he could jump his bike over 4 of his friends
With his hands behind his back

We had fun growing up
I followed him everywhere
He could make me belly laugh
When we moved out to the farm
He taught me so many things
Including how to rope a calf

After 4 years in the army my bro came home
Got a job with the county police
Married his high school sweetheart and had 3 great kids
He bought a Harley - loved the grease

‘So Joe,’ I said, ‘when can we get together
And have a barb-b-que
I’ve been missing your jokes and I know our folks would love to see you there’
Joe just laughed with his joyous rumble
And looked at me with his big grin
Then I realized when he started to cry
That I’m talking with the dead again

My dad told me ‘Son, never point a gun unless you mean to shoot.’
He had sage advice and the kindest wife
And his favorite beer was root

My pops brought me to church and raised me right
But as a teen I didn’t care
What he had to say
I went my own way
And our meeting times were rare

I struggled for years and after two failed marriages
I went over to see mom and dad
I said ‘Sorry dad, I should have listened to what you said’
He said, ‘Don’t worry about it now,
your mom and I never stopped praying.’
They gave me a huge hug and we prayed to God
And that meant the world to me

In his late seventies my dad started to get frail
Those calloused hands couldn’t lift as much
The adventurous life he loved
Those dreams grew out of touch
Dad said, ‘Son, I want to know, did I do right by God?’
I said ‘Pops, you know, you did right by me, you showed me how to love God’s way’
And I realize as we hug goodbye
That I’m talking with the dead again

You and I met on the the telephone
And agreed to go on a blind date
I drove over that night to pick you up
And wondered ‘What have I done?’
But when you stepped out beneath that old street light
My world forever changed

We spent many years in a dreamlike love
You were never far away
We were close like toast on the smoked ham roast
You always made for me
And I rub your head when we go to bed
Until you rest peacefully on my chest

I said ‘When will you be here ‘cause I’ve missed you dear
And my life just ain’t the same
I am all alone in this cavernous home
Like a hawk I drift alone’
You said ‘I love you Honey,
and love is never gone.’
And I realize as we talk on this phone
That I’m talking with the dead again

Chorus:
Talking with the dead again
Oh I am talking with the dead again
Good relationships don’t quit
Just ‘cause they are at the end
So I keep talking with the dead again.

Song of 2020

Something’s happening ‘round the world
Nobody can escape it, boy or girl
There’s a virus traveling ‘round the globe
Someday it’ll be told in the stories of old

There’s a shortage of facts
There’s a lack of trust
It’s hard to relax
When I might turn to dust
Well I am stuck inside and I cannot lie,
I’m sick and tired of this… single ply!

Social distance is a thing and you’re wearing a mask
Hard to work from home when you can’t stay on task
We flatten the curve, we grow out our hair
We risk going outside to get a breath of fresh air

No more paper
No more plastic
Where’s the TP?
Where’s the traffic?
Can’t go nowhere, gotta stay inside
And I’m sick and tired of this… single ply!

I’m second guessing my health
While I’m losing my wealth
Did allergies just make me sneeze?
Gotta pray it wasn’t that COVID19!

We don’t have to worry
The TV explains
About nuclear bombs
About acid rains
The number of deaths we can’t quantify
But I’m sick and tired of this… single ply!

I’m feeling all cooped up inside
Told myself I can no longer hide
I want to travel, want to go
Went down to the station but the station was closed

You might feel angry
You might feel depressed
You might be anxious
Or scared half to death
But I’m here to tell you what’s on my mind
I’m sick and tired of this… single ply!

I miss my mom and I miss my dad
I miss the conversations we once had
Wanna give ‘em a hug but it ain’t happening
Nobody gives hugs in quarantine

Will it ever end?
Will it be over soon?
Is there a light at the end
Of this tunnel of gloom?
Can’t rub your face, can’t rub your eyes,
Well I’m sick and tired of this… single ply!

Fraud Dodger

You have no money when you used to have plenty
The cost of commerce in the year 2020
The online bandits mimicked your bank
Your trust violated, your security sank

Scammed by deception, someone most fraudulent
Your credit was in good standing, now you can’t pay your rent
Were your assets frozen during investigation?
Did you shop online in this great fraud nation?

You used to trust others, you smiled at all strangers
Now you keep your head down and avoid all the dangers
You can’t risk being vulnerable and so violated
While the dredges of society become satiated

They don’t care about your children or retirement plans
They’re in love with your money, really big fans
They take without asking, now you hoard like an old codger
To do business in today’s world: become a fraud dodger

Fractal

God created a working design concept and put it into motion throughout the universe. It lends it shaping anthem to the planets, stars, liquids, rocks, gasses, metals, plants, and beings. Layer upon layer grow and die, enlarge and collapse in God’s perfect time.

Outside forces in inward resources work together in harmony to grow the next segment like a ripple in the sea. Each fractal is mathematical and unique. We see the concept clearly in a snowflake, and we feel it on our skin. Every molecule we are is a fractal of a fractal. Our DNA a fractal string. We dream fractals in our sleep and do our best to mimic them in our art. The concept is so simple that we love it and so complex that we will never understand it.

We are connected to the fractal design on more than a molecular level. Could it be that the fractal will be revealed to us in Heaven as the way God limited time and space in our universe while in Heaven fractals remained unleashed in order to open up eternity and vastness to reflect God’s glory forever? Growth without death, enlargement without collapse. Good without bad. Unlimited power, unlimited glory.

God is the master designer, the supreme builder, the ultimate artist.

I wish I believed in ghosts

You aren’t here anymore
The emptiness is haunting
How will we live without you?
The climb ahead is daunting

If you were here today
You’d make us laugh and smile
We’d hold you close and love you
But I’m afraid we’re in denial

Because we want to see you
In every room, around every corner
The lack of you makes the house feel
Like a vague and unknown foreigner

So we recall fondest memories
We take pictures out to cry
And when grief punches us again
We let out a hurt-filled sigh

We try to look for hope to come
We yearn for joy that’s missing
And cry again upon confirming
The hollow hope we’re wishing

That’d you’d be there when we get home
You’d be back like you weren’t gone
And life would go on happily
And the funeral was wrong

Since that lie eludes us
We are wrestling with the wind
Reaching out for something tangible
Gaining nothing but pretend

I wish I believed in ghosts
At least then I’d have a reason
For hearing you echo in my head
Seeing you in every season

All we can do is forge ahead
As we struggle through this blindness
And try to share with others
Your unique way of showing kindness

You will always be in our heart
And in our memory
We take comfort knowing you’re not hurting
And from these earthly bonds you’re free.
